1. Coaching and Managing for successful mergers & acquisitions

The Client Issues: a major player in the utilities sector was significantly affected by changes resulting from de-regularisation which were affecting its Call Centre and Energy businesses.  They were trying to work towards the imminent sale of the business to an American parent.  They asked HRO Associates to provide a solution to support them through transition to integrate two very different business models.

The Solution: HRO Associates provided an Interim HR Manager to oversee day-to-day operations whilst at the same time raising HR’s profile at Executive Board level.   This provided an integrated service combining existing organisational performance with objective assessment and an in-depth feedback and review process.  Once the merger date was agreed, they designed and delivered a tailor-made coaching programme to deliver to HR & Training managers using the unique Balance in Business profile to explore aspects of behaviour, knowledge and experience, attitudes, values and motivation. The results were summarised into a practical report with recommendations on next steps and core development processes.

The Outcomes: The individuals involved genuinely learned more about themselves and their capability for the future. They were able to start a process of on the job development and specific learning, of true development leading to a wider range of skills and better focus re business results.  This they subsequently were able to deliver to key account managers to increase sales and lower costs through performance and motivation.

Comment: the client commented, " The coaching experience was especially helpful in dealing with the internal conflict resulting through the pressures of significant culture change.  This has been an invaluable learning experience which enabled the Board to deliver a smooth transition for maximum business benefit."

2. Carrying the business through the intricacies of employment legislation

The Client Issues: a high profile public sector body was way behind schedule to delvier the merger of nine businesses into one pan-London office.  They decided to bring in HRO to build an interim HR team to manage the people issues relating to the merger.

The Solution: HRO were able to recruit a team of HR professionals to manage the intricate employment law issues relating to the merger and cover both the technical areas as well as behavioural aspects.  A process surrounding the framework was put together and presented in a one page summary format for easy implementation. HRO Associates have since assisted the implementation process by providing a critical evaluation training key personnel for the new business moving forward

The Outcome: the client is now able to move forward with a permanent Executive Management Team who are better placed to target new business especially in highly competitive environments.

Comment: the client is now operational with a strong Executive Management Team. We are "delighted with this unique approach", and can see how it’s added real value to the business.

3. Managing the challenges of culture change through transition

The Client Issues: a well-known Sporting Association, having undergone significant change at Board level, identified a gap between the Personnel function and the new HR department moving forward. Recruiting a new Head of HR was time-consuming and de-motivating for those not involved in the new business. An objective and constructive intermediary was called for as the ideal solution.

The Solution: aiming to tackle culture change and employee issues, HRO were asked to provide a unique interim solution whilst educating the Chief Executive and his Executive Management Team of the value of a strategic HR function. Included was the day-to-day operations and significant team building with HR professionals moving forward. Development reviews and action planning formed the next and most important stage.

The Outcome: the client can now move forward with the best HR team in place with the skills and experience to coach and train key account managers in best employment practice.   The whole workforce is benefiting from seeing possibilities which did not exist before. It is an educational and growth experience for all those involved.

Comment: the client is now committed to implementation of best HR practice throughout the UK. The initiative is seen as key by the directors, stakeholders, and the workforce. The Chief Executive said "they brought a skilled and creative HR input at short notice and injected just enough strategic influence to manage our short term business needs making a significant difference to our high profile image."

4. Career Management and Out-placement solutions for unforeseen economic climate changes

The Client Issues: A City career management consultancy desperately needed help to provide out-placement and career consulting to the large volume of individual high flyers affected by the down-turn in as a result of events during the last quarter of 2002. We were able to "hit the ground running" to respond immediately to our clients needs.

The Solution: individual one-to-one sessions and tailor made workshops were designed and delivered to fit with the resourcing needs. Understanding individual responses to stress and seeing typical patterns of behaviour was the first step. The next step was a series of hands-on relaxation and stress-reducing techniques and a selection of coaching models.

The Outcome: participants were able to make career choices from a relaxed and comfortable position with the knowledge that they could manage any pressures during the coming weeks with reasonable ease. Most have found new and better jobs and some have made life-changing career decisions.
